Swimming pools are sources of fun, exercise and increased home value. But while they are worthwhile investments, they are still significant structural additions that need the appropriate maintenance to ensure longevity. But while the focus typically turns to in-ground pools when the topic of pool care arises, you must also consider other pool types.
Remarkably, though they may seem simple, straightforward, and unassuming, above-ground pools still require some care and maintenance. Unfortunately, this need doesn’t start and stop at something as simple as filling the pool with water and jumping in. Instead, there are a few things to do to ensure your swimming pool stays clean, safe and inviting for a long time. Here is a list of actions to take while looking after your above-ground pool:
- The filter and pump are some of the most critical components connected to your swimming pool, as they help clear the water. The pump provides the force necessary for circulating and pushing the water through the filter. Please note: it is crucial to aim to drive ALL the water in the pool through the filter every 8 hours. So, the best time to run the pump and filter is for 8 to 12-hour stretches during the daytime. Moreover, water circulation is critical. By ensuring the water moves around your pool’s perimeter, you certify that the motion makes it more difficult for bacteria and algae formation and growth. Moreover, it directs debris into the skimmer, where the filter can capture it.
- Your filter’s primary purpose is to catch and eliminate debris and microscopic particles. If you use cartridge filters, they feature a cartridge inside, which you can remove and wash using a garden hose. However, you will eventually have to replace the cartridge to maintain your filter’s proper operation and efficiency.
- Certain areas in above-ground pools (often around the walls and floor) typically have little circulation. These spots are breeding grounds for issues like algae growth. Therefore, you must thoroughly brush and vacuum your pool’s floor and walls once a week. This frequency is the most adequate, no matter which pool cleaning tool you use- even if it is an automatic cleaner.
- Test your water PH levels and sanitisers regularly. If you do so twice or thrice weekly, you will be better informed of how the sun, rain and chemical applications affect the pool water. In addition, regular testing ensures crystal-clear water throughout the season. Hint: Use a digital test strip reader to make this task much faster. But, if you encounter difficulties maintaining the water’s PH, it is best to check its alkalinity. These checks ensure your pool water remains within the correct range and allow you to adjust accordingly.
- Chlorine tablets are the most popular and efficient sanitisers in above-ground pools. These tablets come in compressed form- allowing them to slowly dissolve while releasing chlorine, thus keeping your water clean and eliminating bacteria. Alternatively, there are chlorine sticks and granules available. However, whichever you select must use stabilised chlorine (a process that protects the chemical from the sun’s damaging rays so it lasts longer and works more effectively).
- Bodycare products like sun lotions, hair spray, and even your body’s sweat typically foster debris build-up in the water. This accumulation can cause eye and skin irritation or odour- hence debunking the myth that chlorine causes these issues. Instead, the contaminants hinder the chlorine’s ability to maintain the water’s cleanliness. So, when you notice it happening, you have to *shock* your pool about once weekly. This process oxidises the contaminants and frees up the chlorine to keep your pool’s water crystal-clear. Furthermore, regular shock treatments kill any resistant algae.
Your above-ground pool may require a bit more maintenance than you had imagined. However, the effort is worth it, if only so that you can cool off and watch your family and friends enjoying themselves this summer.
