Tanzania is a beautiful country situated in the Eastern side of Africa, with part of it set along the Indian Ocean. The country is well known for its profusion in wildlife and deep-rooted culture. Thousands of tourists from all over the world fly down for the African Safari experience inside the many National Parks of country, the Zanzibar beaches and of course the climbing the greatest pride of the country, Mount Kilimanjaro. It may seem surreal that one country has so much to offer, at such reasonable prices. The idea is to save money wherever you can.
Here are some tips you could use during your backpacking trip:
Choose the right location
If you want to save some cash, Moshi Town (Kilimanjaro region) is by far the most affordable and convenient town to spend most of your nights. It is located right at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Moreover, it is close to some major National Parks like Arusha National Park and Tarangire National Park.
Cheap Accommodation
Towns like Moshi have plenty of backpacker hostels, that are clean, safe, convenient and affordable. There is access to food in most nearby areas, therefore one need not worry too much about logistics.
Clothes to Pack:
You may not necessarily need hiking wear or anything special. Basic athletic wear can do the job. If you plan to climb Kilimanjaro, it is advisable to pack layers. This will include an inside base layer, Nylon Pants, T-shirts, sun-hat, a jacket, a light pull over, warm hat and gloves and waterproof jacket and pants in case it rains. The rain-wear is great for protection from mosquitoes, too! Why it is good to layer is because you can quickly change according to the weather.
Research:
It is a good idea to buy a local guide book so you can know where to go and what to expect. You will also be able to understand local weather patterns, as well as the wildlife activity and insect activity. A book is far much better than looking online; because information is given to you in a more organized and relevant manner.
Flights
You may end up spending quite a bit on your flight to Tanzania – Plane tickets are an inevitable expense. But here are a few things that will help you save some money – Book your flight well in advance for the best price. Also, if you are moving around the country, choose to go by bus instead of flying. Moving within towns can also be super cheap- use rickshaws, because they are comfy compared to the local mini buses and motor bikes.
