The Most Common Issue
Let’s face it: We all use cookware every day. Without it, there won’t be food on the table. The PTFE was then developed and changed into a name we know so well today, the Teflon. The problem with Teflon happened when studies found out that the coating compounds were actually harmful. According to studies, the coating would degrade at high temperatures. As a result, it will release fine particles to the air that can be toxic when you inhale it. Not to mention that the cookware itself can contaminate the food. However, there are different claims about Teflon. The company said that it stopped using the dangerous PFOA compounds in 2013. It claimed that all of its products after 2013 are safe, and it always includes the details (whether using PFOA or PTFE). If your heart is still with Teflon, you can consider buying newer products. Make sure that they don’t contain PTFE or PFOA. The risk is yours, anyway.
Ceramic
There are different opinions about whether ceramic cookware is safe for cooking. While some are said to be completely safe, others are reported to contain high levels of heavy metals and lead. The number 18 represents chromium while the second one represents nickel. If the second number is lower, then the nickel content is low. The lower the number, the better (and healthier) it is.
Cast Iron
For most people, cast iron is considered ideal because it is easy to clean. Although it is claimed to leach a small amount of iron, it is considered an added benefit – as long as it is still within a safe level. The proper cleaning and maintenance are not to clean it with Brillo pad and soap. If you can do it, you can preserve the natural non-stick surface. It can hold in the flavour as well as deliver even heat. The main downside is when you have to cook something acidic because it will result in the off flavour. Just season it before cooking.
Glass
Glass is the safest type of cookware, as it doesn’t leach compounds into the food. Unfortunately, it breaks easily and can be pretty expensive. Most baking or oven cookware is made from glass. So, what is the healthiest cookware out there? For now, there is no 100% safest or healthiest cookware, really, unless it is glass. But glass cookware can be difficult to find and expensive. The best thing you can do is to have different kinds of cookware and use them in turns. This is the ideal scenario to avoid food contamination and health risks while preparing food for daily consumption.
