On the SABC1 soapie Skeem Saam, he is a successful businessman, but in real life, Cedric Fourie is a humble young man still nurturing his acting craft.
DRUM caught up with the hunky 27-year-old who everyone is raving about.
He tells us about his childhood, life before Skeem Saam and future dreams.
Here is Cedric on his:
Humble beginnings
“I was born and raised in Soweto. Growing up, I was raised by my mother and grandma because my dad died when I was young. My childhood wasn’t extravagant but it was very memorable and fairly enjoyable.”
Role on Skeem Saam
“Viewers will be kept on their toes as the real Lehasa will be revealed. In two weeks’ time. You will get to see why he’s acting like this. He doesn’t like Sonti (portrayed by Pearl Maimela), for him, it’s a business transaction. The story is about to unfold and it’s an exciting storyline.”
Previous job
“After my matriculation in 2007, I couldn’t afford to study drama and so I got a bursary to study engineering, specifically Computer Networks. I worked on that field but I was still going for auditions. But last August, I got a call back from Skeem Saam and it has been amazing.”
Personal life
“I have been with the mother of my son for four years now and my son is only two. I’m not ready for marriage because it’s quite a big step. I’m on the verge of getting a house and I still want to stay on my own and feel bored, then I will take it from there.”
His challenges
“I still go to auditions and I still get ‘you don’t look or sound Black enough’. Those are some of the challenges I’ve come across on auditions. I hear I don’t speak English like a South African. The truth is: I don’t want to live my background, I’m trying to move away. Just because I’m from Soweto, doesn’t mean I have to look, sound or smell like it.”
Future plans
“I wish to win an Oscar someday. I believe we as SA actors are that talented. Also, I want to own a production company where I can tell real stories that have never been told before. I want to act abroad too. So I’m still trying to nurture my craft.”
