This young woman bravely fought off a mugger, while a street guard stood by watching.
The incident happened at 16:24 on Sunday in Roosevelt Park, Johannesburg.
News24 confirmed the teen was walking from Northcliff Square, where she works, to visit a friend on Anreith Street. As she approached her destination, a red VW Polo pulled up next to her.
A man from the vehicle asked for directions. When she said she could not help he lunged at her. Their struggle ended on the ground. Her attacker pinned her on the ground before making off with her cell phone.
A family member of the teen's friend told News24 she noticed the street guard a few meters away and hoped he’d come to her aid.
She is traumatised but sustained no injuries, the family member said.
A case was opened at the Linden police station on Monday.
The street guard has since been suspended.
