To mark Freedom Day and Workers Day, SA's iconic Freshlyground have released a new music video, Banana Republic.
"This couldn't wait" says the band's Zolani Mahola. "We love this country and its people. This long weekend, with Freedom Day and Workers Day, we are reminded of what we need to hold dear to our hearts, and what we need to protect moving forward."
Banana Republic or Banana State is a political science term that refers to a small state that is politically unstable as a result of the domination of its economy by a single export controlled by foreign capital.
Some of the song lyrics include, "All your people dying in freedom. Suffering a profound lack of leading" and "Governor, look me in the eye. See I am a human too."
The video also contains footage courtesy of the documentary film The Giant is Falling.
