FORMER mayor and current leader of the ANC opposition in Nelson Mandela Bay, Danny Jordaan, is set to announce his resignation this afternoon.
Nelson Mandela Bay region ANC spokesman Gift Ngqondi confirmed that Jordaan would be announcing his resignation as party leader in council at a press conference 2.30pm today.
The ANC Regional Task Team (RTT) announced that Jordaan had been nominated and had accepted the position of leader of the opposition at a press conference just over a month ago, on 24 August.
"He is our tried and tested leader. We don’t just select people, we select people on the basis of what they possess," Nelson Mandela Bay's ANC RTT convener, Vuyani Limba, said at the time.
Asked at the time whether Jordaan would remain as head of the opposition for the full five-year term, Limba said this was just speculation.
"The question of full five years is your speculation. When we deploy someone, we deploy for the full period," he said.
Since the elections, Jordaan has missed all three official sittings of the new municipal council.
