Tumi Morake walked away with top honours at the 6th Savannah Comics’ Choice Awards held on Saturday at Monte Casino.
The comedian beat Loyiso Gola, Mashabela Galane, Skhumba Hlophe and Carvin Goldstone to the coveted Comic of the Year award, making history as the first female to walk away with the title.

“This is for all those who said I can’t be a wife, a mother and a comedian at the same time. Most importantly, this is for all women. It’s about time a woman got recognition for comedy,” Morake said.
Speaking to Sowetan Live after the show, the former Our Perfect Wedding presenter insisted that people give comedians props for their hardwork.
“I’m saying this because in this country the next big topic next to race is gender. People need to acknowledge and give props to the comics of this country because these are men who voted for me. People need to give props to the fact that this is the most forward-thinking industry.”
