The National Assembly will on Wednesday vote to decide if advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane is the right woman to replace Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.
Mkhwebane needs the approval of 60% of MPs in order for her name to be sent to President Jacob Zuma for approval.
She was the last woman standing, from over 60 candidates who applied to replace Madonsela. Her term ends in October.
Parliament’s ad hoc committee tasked with finding a new public protector chose Mkhwebane, Judges Sharise Weiner and Siraj Desai, and Prof Bongani Majola as its final candidates.
The ANC, EFF, IFP, NFP and ACDP, endorsed Mkhwebane’s candidacy at the committee’s last meeting.
The DA said on Tuesday she was not the best candidate. The party claimed she worked as a spy for the State Security Agency while employed as an immigration officer at the South African embassy in China.
