NEW kwaito sensation Babes Wodumo has shocked the music fraternity – again.
This after music fans started complaining about her single, titled Mercedece.
Many music lovers describe the song as promoting a deadly drug known in Durban as “umgwinyo” or “data”. Two schoolkids died from taking it earlier this year, while 28 pupils were admitted to hospital.
“Babes Wodumo”, real name Bongekile Simelane from Lamontville in Durban, KZN, is expected to drop the single this month, and already music fans are divided about the song.
In the song, Babes features her West Ink boss and Big Nuz member, Mandla “Mampintsha” Maphumulo, and producer-cum-artist, Madadon.
Fans, who spoke to Sunday Sun, said: “It’s sad that Babes can promote such a drug when she knows the drug is problematic in our society.
“We lost two pupils because of the same drug and now they’re releasing a song about it.
“It’s crazy since she comes from a Christian family. Now they’re not condoning the use of the drug, but are celebrating it.”
Khanyi Mngadi, who lost her 19-year-old brother in the incident where schoolkids were abusing umgwinyo, said the song should be banned.
“It’s quite scary that the pastor’s kid can come up with such a song. They should be sending a message to young people not to do drugs. These drugs are demonic and we need people like Babes to help build the nation, not destroy it.
“They should just do away with that song as it condones the use of drugs,” she said.
Mampintsha refused to comment. He said “Whee ag!” before hanging up the phone.
Babes Wodumo also refused to comment.
