After what has been a roller-coaster ride with the SABC’s Metro FM, controversial radio presenter Phat Joe (born Majota Kambule) is joining East Coast Radio.
Phat Joe joined the Durban-based radio station as of Monday, 15 August, to host the daily drive time show, on air from 15.00 to 18.00.
Feedback on Twitter and Facebook has been lukewarm with some implying that East Coast, being a regional station, was a downgrade for veteran announcer.
“East Coast is among the top five revenue-generating stations in the country. You tell me if that’s a downgrade or not,” Phat Joe said when DRUM spoke to him.
We asked him to elaborate on his reasons for leaving Metro FM and if he’s going to miss the station. He was quite evasive on the first part of the question but did concede that he will miss the personnel at Metro FM.
“It’s a beautiful station and I might go back,” he said. “I love the people and I’m going to miss the station.”
So he doesn’t find the new music quotas stifling? “Of course I’m a fan of the new quotas. A lot of musicians are going to make money out of that. It’s great for South African music.”
Phat Joe has had a stint at Gauteng-based stations such as YFM and Kaya FM. Prior his departure at Metro FM he was suspended for uttering unsavoury remarks about TV’s ‘It girl’, Bonang Matheba.
He was also seen as a rabble-rouser when he tweeted a message that sought to question the practicality of the new music quotas at the SABC.
