A SCHOOL principal has appeared in the Nongoma Magistrate's Court yesterday for allegedly sexually assaulting a pupil.
The man was released on R1 000 bail and his case was postponed to 29 September, Captain Nqobile Gwala said.
A teacher at the school who didn’t want to be named said allegations had emerged last year that the principal was having sex with pupils.
"Two children admitted to having sex with him and the matter was swept under the carpet. When the school governing body asked him about the matter, he told them that it had nothing to do with them,” said the teacher.
The teacher alleged that, last Thursday, a Grade 7 pupil left the principal’s office crying, and told another teacher that the principal had sexually assaulted her.
"When she reported it, one of the teachers shouted at her and said the matter would bring the school into disrepute."
The source claimed the principal had since gone to ground.
"He has let the school down so many times," the teacher said.
The KZN education department said it was not aware of the allegations.
"If the incident is true, that principal knows what is coming for him," spokesman Muzi Mahlambi said.
An investigation would be instituted and if the principal was found guilty, he would be fired, Mahlambi said.
