More than 1 000 people have been arrested in two police cluster operations in Cape Town over the last week.
Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk on Sunday said that the two separate operations, conducted in Mitchell's Plain and Nyanga, yielded 618 and "more than 400" arrests respectively.
242 suspects were arrested for possession of drugs during stop and search operations in Mitchell's Plain since Friday, July 15. Eighty-seven houses were searched for drugs in the same time period.
In Nyanga, 209 were also arrested on narcotics charges, while 126 drug houses were searched, and 707l of alcohol were confiscated.
The other arrests were related to firearms charges, traffic offences, vehicle theft and crimes against women and children in the two areas.
The suspects will all appear this week in the Athlone, Bishop Lavis, Philippi and Wynberg Magistrates' Courts, among others.
Mitchells Plain cluster commander Major General Gregory Goss said the police would maintain a "zero tolerance" approach in the prevention and investigation of crime.
He applauded the good work of all members who participated in these operations, in conjunction with other security forces.
