Sunday World can reveal that Emtee, real name Mthembeni Ndevu, was driving a silver Toyota Yaris and had to walk more than 8km carrying a fuel container to get to the nearest petrol station.
About 2km before he got to the petrol station, a shuttle coming from the same event drove by and its passengers noticed his car and stopped to rescue him.
The incident happened two weeks ago when Emtee was on his way back to Joburg after performing at a students freshers' ball at the University of Limpopo's Turfloop campus.
According to two witnesses who rescued the rapper, Emtee had left them at the event before midnight while they were waiting for their artists to perform.
On their way back to Jozi, they saw his car parked on the side of the highway.
"He was carrying a 5-litre fuel container, struggling to walk and looking tired," said one of the two witnesses.
Both witnesses said Emtee was in the company of three men and a woman.
Emtee confirmed that he was stuck on the highway coming from Turfloop, but he disputed that it was because he had run out of petrol.
"Yes, I attended a gig in Turfloop. But we didn't (get) stuck because of petrol. I can't say why. But ja, it happened, man," he said.
He said his driver had to walk for a few kilometres to get help, and claimed that he was sleeping in the car at the time.
