2015-16 PSL Footballer of the Season, Absa Premiership Player’s Player of the Season and Midfielder of the Season.
Last night’s glittering function was attended by the who’s who of local football and entertainment.
Billiat beat off challenges from two of his teammates, Keagan Dolly and Hlompho Kekana, for all three awards. It is the first time that three players from one team had been named in three main categories.
Making it an even bigger night for the newly crowned Premiership champions, Brazilianshead coach Pitso Mosimane walked away with the Coach of the Season gong.
Deservedly so, tough-as-teak Downs defender Thabo Nthethe was voted Defender of the Season (R50 000) and Telkom Player of the Tournament, edging out teammates Denis Onyango and Bongani Zungu.
Nthethe is today banking a cool R250 000 having collected R200 000 for the Knockout award. Onyango was named Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season, which comes with R50 000 in prize money.
Billiat, who is earmarked to play in Europe next season – probably in France – could be in for more awards and cash when Sundowns hold their annual awards ceremony soon. He is also tipped to be named Zimbabwe’s Footballer of the Season to add another feather in his cap.
The Young Player of the Season award went to Mpumalanga Black Aces’ promising midfield star, the talented Aubrey Modiba.
Aces head coach Muhsin Ertugral has predicted a bright future for Modiba, who went home with R50 000.
Aces chairmen, Mario and George Marfou confirmed last night the sale of the club to John Comitis, who wants to move it to Cape Town.
It was an emotional moment when the late Cecil Lolo of Ajax Cape Town was named the MTN8 Last Man Standing after helping the Urban Warriors win the trophy earlier this season before he was tragically killed in a car accident in Cape Town.
