Hundreds of people converged on Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium to celebrate Human Rights Day on Monday.
Bongani Nduli, 54, from Hammersdale, said he had come to the stadium to hear President Jacob Zuma’s address. He anticipated that Zuma would encourage people to vote in the upcoming local government elections.
People arrived in buses from all over the province to join the celebrations.
Shirley Ibrahim, 50, from Bayview said she was excited to be at the event because she supported the ANC, and because there would be food and many people.
Trevor King, 49, from Phoenix said he had come to support the ANC.
Tim Boettiger, 49 and Kerri Mills, 35, both from Kloof, arrived wearing traditional Zulu regalia.
“This is the new South Africa and we need to celebrate it. We need to be one and hopeful about our country,” said Boettiger, also known as Shobalembuzi.
“Our blood is one, but our colours are many. But to me colour is nothing.”
Religious leaders opened the celebrations with prayer.
Human Rights Day commemorates the shooting of 69 people during a protest against the apartheid regime’s pass laws at the Sharpeville police station on 21 March 1960.
