THE Hawks today poured cold water on a weekend newspaper report that an arrest was about to be made for soccer star Senzo Meyiwa’s murder.
“I know nothing of an arrest or any development in the case,” Hawks spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.
“We do not deal with newspaper reports. It is our obligation to stay in touch with the family and we have done that.”
The Sunday Independent reported that police were about to arrest a person who was in the house in Vosloorus when the Bafana Bafana captain was killed on 26 October 2014.
Quoting a cop close to the investigation, the newspaper reported that the suspect was identified after the reconstruction of the crime scene two weeks ago, and by studying statements from witnesses present that night.
“The discrepancies in this particular statement by one of the eyewitnesses in the house have convinced us that no armed robbery took place that day,” the officer told the newspaper.
“I can unfortunately not give more information, but the suspect is lucky not to have spent the Easter weekend in police cells. But we will pounce any time from today [Sunday].”
Senzo was at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s mother’s home when a man entered and shot him, apparently during a scuffle.
Zanukuhle Mbatha, initially arrested for the murder, was released from custody in November 2014 due to a lack of evidence.
Those in the house at the time reportedly included Kelly, her two children, her mother Ntombi, her sister Zandi, Zandi’s boyfriend Longwe Twala, and two of Meyiwa’s friends.
