He is a muscular hunk whose popularity has grown in leaps and bounds since he made his debut on the popular SABC 1 soapie Generations:The Legacy just over a year ago.
He’s loved and adored by many of his fans-females in particular.
But even if celebrites are popular, there are still times when they should learn to bite their tongues.
Just ask Vuyo Dabula, who plays the role of the ruthless Gadaffi. He’s now on the receiving end of a slew of insults after he humiliated several admirers at the recent Metro FM Music Awards.
His worst offence was when he told a female groupie to wash before asking him for a hug.
“You must go take a good bath and clean up nicely before asking for a hug,”he reportedly said.”Generally,I don’t give hugs. It’s not in me.”
Vuyo’s fans stood at the entrance of Durban’s International Convention Center waiting to greet him.
“Gadaffi,Gadaffi,Gadaffi”,they screamed, barely able to contain their excitement.
But the actor apparently couldn’t be bothered to interact with his fans.He just stood at arm’s length, and waved briefly beofre he disappeared inside.
As fans begged him to return,Vuyo helped himself to vodka and shook his head as he laughed at the eager crowd. The drama unfolded in front of the DRUM team, who watched open-mouthed.
We spoke to Vuyo’s fan,Mandisa Gumbi, who says she asked for a hug but Vuyo repelled her by telling her that she stinks.
“He is one of the celebrities I came to see n the black carpet,”she tells us.”But after today,I’ve lost all respect for him.I wanted an honest hug and a selfie. He told me I needed to take a long bathe before I could get a hug.”
Mandisa is clearly shocked and angered by Vuyo’s words.
“What makes him think he is better than other celebrities? We’ve been standing here getting selfies.Khabonina (Qubeka) even danced for us.Toya Delazy kissed my hand, but not Gadaffi.”
Another fan,Sibusisso Mdletshle, concurd with Mandisa’s story. He tells us that he feels undermined and belittled by the actor.
“I put out my hand for a handshake, but he told me to keep my hand away from him,”Sibusiso says.”He told me in no uncertain terms that he does not do handshakes with strangers.I just wanted to feel his hand against mine, but I coudn’t even touch him because he was standing too far.
“The guy is big-headed and has a terrible ego,”he concludes.
We chat with another well-known artist, who asked not to be named, who has also beeen watching the sad scene unfold.
“I watched with dismay when he did that, but I am not surprised at all.I know him;he is like that.It is disappointing that celebrities undermine the very same people who put them on the map,”the artist tells us.
Vuyo’s behaviour is a distinct contrast to that of most celebrities who are arriving around the same time. These include Khabonina,Khanya Mafokate and AKA.
We note that they have no problem interacting with the fans.NATURALLY,we approach Vuyo about the incident.
“Look,I’m not here to greet or entertain fans,”the star replies.”Besides,I don’t get paid to greet fans. It’s none of your business.”He continues to sip his vodka for another 20 Minutes before he surprisingly returns to face his admirers.
By this time, they are not so keen to put up with his nonsense. The tables have turned and they are showering him with insults and calling him a diva.
“Maybe you need Mamlambo around to stop you from ignoring us,”a fan in the crowd yells. This is a reference to the snake in the SABC 1 soupie, which Vuyo’s on-screen wife,Tshibi (played by Letoya Makhene),keeps in the house. It’s supposed to bring them luck and power.
Again,Drum approaches the prickly actor to see what made him change his mind and go out and greet his followers all of a sudden.
“What I choose to do should be none of your business,”the hot-tempered actor responds before turning his back and walking away.
