South African film and TV stars were celebrated and honoured at the tenth annual Saftas ceremony held at Gallagher Estate.
The biggest weekend of the awards season kicked off on Friday when the technical awards were handed.
On Sunday night during a live broadcast on SABC2 small screen and big screen stars received their Golden Horns.
The ceremony was hosted by Minnie Dlamini and Katlego Maboe who walked away with the Best Presenter award for a second year in a row.
However, other people that made news from the SAFTA awards were the likes of DJ Arch Jnr who closed off the award ceremony with a great performance.
The 4-year old DJ began trending for the amazing talent that he has, however as always, there were those who were hating on the little guy, questioning whether he really knows how to DJ.
Thankfully there were those who defended and believes in the toddlers talent.
The biggest winner for the night went to Skeem Saam who scooped the Best TV Soap award. This also was shrouded in controversy with people questioning if Skeem Samm falls under the ‘Soapie’ category.
It is also to be noted that Muvhango boycotted the awards show because they felt they are being undermined. Associate producer at Muvhango Morishe Matlejoane said the team decided to “indefinitely” not honour the awards “until an improvement is noted in the category nominations and selection process of judges”.
Matlejoane said there would always be room to question the nominations in any contest where judges were selected “within” the system and not independently.
“For years, there’s been growing scepticism around the processes followed by the organisers,” said Matlejoane.
“On those grounds, the awards are not run to encompass every broadcaster and give a true reflection of the South African TV landscape.
