Telecommunications and Postal Services Minister Siyabonga Cwele has announced the launch of free Wi-Fi hotspots in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality as part of the government’s plan to increase broadband penetration.
“The Wi-Fi hotspots are deployed mostly in the underserved areas such as townships and settlements,” said the department.
“It is one of the ways in which government is implementing the broadband policy known as South Africa Connect.”
The Wi-Fi hotspots will provide Internet access to the following areas:
- 225 Schools
- Taxi ranks
- Spaza Shops
- Internet Cafes
- SMMEs
- Government Departments
- Community Health Clinics
- Traffic Offices
- Libraries
- Disaster Management Centres
- Police Stations
- Post Offices
