Eastern Cape traditional leaders want answers from Nelson Mandela’s grandson Nkosi Zwelivelile ‘Mandla’ Mandela about why he reportedly converted to Islam when he married a Muslim woman.
The Congress of Traditional Leaders of South African (Contralesa) has called on Mandla Mandela, chief of the Mvezo people, to step down from his position.
The Congress of Traditional Leaders of South African (Contralesa) has called on Mandla Mandela, chief of the Mvezo people, to step down from his position.
The organisation says it is not pleased with Mandela’s new religious affiliation and cannot lead his people as a Muslim. Mandela wed Rabia Clarke, his fourth wife, over the weekend.
According to Channel Islam International, Mandela converted to Islam about two months ago.
“It means now he is no longer a chief of AbaThembu in Mvezo (because)… the Mvezo people are not Muslim,” Contralesa said in a statement.
“Traditional leaders don’t marry secretly. He should have been represented by the traditional council of Mvezo. He is the leader of people of Mvezo. We are still trying to locate him to get answers,” he said.
