Mashamaite, who now plays for Swedish club BK Häcken in Sweden, allegedly ploughed his luxurious car into the fence of a library in Ivory Park, near Tembisa, only to be blocked by a carport.
The player, who pocketed R450000 in May last year for winning the PSL Footballer of the Season, Player’s Player of the Season and Defender of the Season titles, was in the country for the Christmas break when the incident happened.
Mashamaite could not be reached for comment nor did he respond to messages sent to him.
Local police denied knowledge of the incident.
According to neighbours who witnessed the incident, Mashamaite appeared to have lost control of his sleek sedan while driving along Freedom Drive in the Ekurhuleni township in the early hours of December 5.
“We had just had our Christmas party on the day when I got a call about the incident. He must have been driving at a high speed because the library’s fence is far away from the street,” said a library employee who asked not to be named.
“He was lucky to make it out alive. None of the occupants in the car was injured either. God was by their side,” he added.
When Sunday World visited the library this week, parts of the carport appeared damaged while the paving looked freshly laid.
Another library employee, who refused to be named, confirmed that the carport and the fence were recently fixed.
“I was on leave, but when I came back two days later I saw what the area looked like before it was fixed,” she said.
Another eye witness, who works at a nearby car wash, said Mashamaite was quickly removed from the scene.
“The incident happened in the early hours of a Saturday morning. We were strictly warned by the police against taking photos at the scene. They said otherwise we would post them on social media. Soon after the incident the driver was taken away but his car remained here, only got towed away during the day when he had long left,” he said.
