This will be the second time that Lupe Fiasco releases a sequel to one of his most beloved albums. Back in 2012, Fiasco released a sequel to his critically acclaimed debut Food and Liquor called Food and Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1. The project was well received and considered a bounce back from Fiasco’s much derided album Lasers.
The Cool, which was released in 2007, was a heavy concept album which played off the track of the same name from Fiasco’s Food and Liquor. The album was led by the singles “Paris, Tokyo,” “Hip-Hop Saved My Life” featuring Nikki Jean and “Superstar” featuring Matthew Santos. The Cool would help earn Fiasco four Grammy nominations in 2009, though he did not win any Grammy Award that year. There’s no indication if The Cool 2 will follow a similar concept as the original or depict a completely unrelated story.
This announcement does mean that it is unlikely Fiasco will be releasing any album in 2016. The Chicago rapper released Tetsuo and Youth earlier this year and followed that up with a mixtape called Pharaoh Height 2/30. While there is a chance Fiasco might deliver a short project similar to Pharaoh Height 2/30, fans will likely be waiting until 2017 for his next LP unless the rumored Skulls album becomes a reality
