Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub said they are looking to partner with companies like Showmax and Netflix to bring video-on-demand content to subscribers.
Speaking on CNBC Africa, Joosub said Vodacom needs to start playing in the content space to sustain its data growth.
He said they are looking at bringing their own offers to market, partnering with brands like Showmax and Netflix.
“These are companies which we will partner with to offer video-on-demand services in South Africa,” said Joosub.
He said giving subscribers the ability to purchase a certain number of viewing hours on ShowMax and Netflix is an attractive option to increase data uptake.
Vodacom’s plan to bring Netflix to South Africa is nothing new, though.
In May 2014, Vodafone UK announced its Red 4G plan subscribers would get a free six-month Netflix subscription.
At the time, Vodacom – which is part of the Vodafone Group – said it may do the same in South Africa.
Joosub said the group is in similar talks to the ones its parent company is having with Netflix about streaming content.
