Marikana documentary, Miners Shot Down, can add another award to its mantle after winning an International Emmy. It received the #iEmmy for Best Documentary at an awards ceremony held in New York on Monday. Miners Shot Down covers the 2012 wildcat strike that led to 34 miners being shot dead by police in Marikana. The documentary, which is directed by Rehad Desai, has already won 20 awards.
MasterChef South Africa was nominated in the non-scripted entertainment category, while satirical comedy, Puppet Nation ZA (ZA News), scored a nomination in the comedy category.
Miners Shot Down has been screened in Australia, Italy, France, Mozambique, Spain, Switzerland, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Belgium, Germany, Austria and the USA.
But many South Africans have not seen the controversial documentary, as free-to-air TV reportedly refuses to broadcast it.
