Convergence technology company Multisource now has access to frequency spectrum which it could use to roll out an LTE network.
Multisource’s recent bid for 100% of Wireless Business Solutions (WBS), which operates iBurst, recently received approval from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa.
Multisource chairman Phumlani Moholi confirmed that using the spectrum for some kind of LTE service was among their plans.
“The reality is that we have to utilise the assets, and one of those assets is the spectrum. It’s one of the very reasons we went for the deal,” said Moholi.
The spectrum Moholi is referring to sits in the 1,800MHz band, which he said is well-suited for an LTE network.
Moholi said all the major stumbling blocks are now out of the way in terms of finalizing the deal, and that there are a few “very quick” commercial things to sort out.
Industry speculation suggests that Multisource’s acquisition of WBS could be finalised as early as next week, but Moholi could not confirm this.
There has also been talk that Duncan Simpson-Craib will take over as CEO of the business under Multisource, but Moholi could not confirm this either.
Moholi was willing to say that they are going to be hands-on, and that he, Simpson-Craib, and Brandon Leigh would be deployed across various segments of the new business.
“We’re all going to be involved in some way or another,” said Moholi.
