The
South African Police Service invites applications for enlistment in the Basic
Police Development Learning Programme from young, energetic, intelligent,
physically and mentally fit individuals who are dedicated to serve their
community by pursuing a career in policing.
Basic
enlistment requirements: Young
South African men and women who are: ●Physically
and mentally healthy
- ü Law abiding citizens who have not been found guilty of a criminal offence (particulars of any pending criminal prosecution must be declared)
- ü Between the ages of 18 and 30
- ü Reservists: 18-40 (Active Reservists will be considered based on a motivation from the relevant Provincial Commissioner)
- ü In possession of a Matric/Senior Certificate/Grade 12
- ü Ability to read, write and speak 2 official languages
- ü Within the mass and height restriction (without shoes not shorter than 1.67m (males) and 1.60m (females) and a BMI (Body Mass Index) of less than 30. BMI is determined by weight (kg)/height (m), for instance: 84kg/1.75 x l.75 (height). 84.7 ÷ 3.06 = 27.45
ü Being in possession of a valid driver’s licence
will be an advantage.
All applicants will be subjected to
fitness, psychometric and medical evaluations and will be interviewed during
the recruitment, selection and enlistment process. The criminal record,
qualifications, driver’s licence, citizenship and residential address of each
applicant will be verified. In addition, the SAPS will also conduct vetting and
reference checking. Applicants must note that their local communities will be
consulted prior to a final decision being taken.
Applicants are encouraged to apply for
posts nearest to place of residence. In view of the physical demands of the
Basic Police Development Learning Programme, applicants with chronic
conditions, physical impairments and any other health conditions that would
lead to the interruption of the Programme will be excluded from participation.
Successful applicants who develop any chronic condition, physical impairment
and/or any other health condition that would lead to interruption of the
Programme will be withdrawn.
Selected applicants will enter into a
2-year contract for participation in the Basic Police Development Learning
Programme offered by the SAPS. The Programme will be presented over the
following periods:
First 10 months
First 10 months of Basic Police
Training including Tactical Policing at a designated SAPS Training Institution.
In addition to the free accommodation, meals, training anire, equipment and
material, trainees will receive a monthly stipend of R3 175.00 for incidental
expenses. Semester I training is strictly residential (full-time accommodation
at the Training Institution is compulsory).
Remaining 14 months
A 12-month probation period during
which trainees receive on-the-job training at a designated police station or
unit and a 2-month integrated assessment phase. During the field Police
Development and Integrated Assessment Phase of the Programme (last fourteen
months), the stipend payable will be equivalent to salary level 3 (currently R6
824.00 per month and R81 894.00 per annum). During year 2, trainees will be
responsible for their own accommodation, meals and transport.
In addition to the above stipends,
trainees will receive medical aid benefits for the duration of the 24-month Basic
Police Development Learning Programme. Upon successful completion of the Basic
Police Development Learning Programme, trainees will be considered for
permanent appointment as members of the SAPS. Remuneration will be on the first
notch of Band A (currently R116 028 per annum). In addition, appointees will
receive the applicable service benefits.
Core
functions: Successful candidates will serve as
functional police officials. As such, they will be deployed to carry out one or
more of the following functions:
- ü Preventing, combating and investigating crime
- ü Maintaining public order
- ü Protecting and securing the inhabitants of the Republic and their property
- ü Upholding and enforcing the law.

- ID Document
- Driver’s licence
- Matric/Senior Certificate/Grade 12 certificate
- Commander’s report (active reservists and current serving Public Service personnel)
